Audiences were amazed when Disney and Sony managed to work together and introduce Spider-Man to the MCU. This version of the character played by Tom Holland made his cinematic debut in the film Captain America: Civil War. Of course, it was done without any kind of backstory, with fans simply assuming his story was similar to those told before. Now director Jon Watts has stepped in to explain why his MCU Spider-Man films did not include the spider bite scene that fans were expecting.
This was explained by Jon Watts in an interview with Sean O’Connell’s new book titled With Great Power. As one might tell by the title, it’s heavily focused on Spider-Man, and as such O’Connell had the opportunity to speak with those involved with the MCU version of the character. At first, via The Direct, he asked Captain America: Civil War writer Christopher Markus about Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. The question included whether or not he knew how the character received his powers.
Here’s what he had to say after being asked if he “think[s] [Peter] was bitten by a radioactive spider on a field trip” or not:
“I mean, God knows there would have to be something not unlike that, probably… But no, I wouldn’t say… I mean, I think he was bitten by a radioactive spider on a field trip. We never talked about that either, but I think that’s what happened.”
Director Jon Watts shared a similar statement when he was asked the question about the possibility of a spider bite scene in the MCU. As he explained, it seemed to work better to “just explore it from the perspective of someone else.” Here’s what he had to say in full:
“It was just so nice to skip past it and just deal with more with the repercussions… and just explore it from the perspective of someone else finding out about it and having a lot of questions.”
As such, it looks like the true origin was never discussed in the beginning. But with several Spider-Man projects currently in the works, one can hope we’ll have more answers regarding the origin story of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. And, of course, what kind of spider bite might’ve been involved in the MCU to give him his powers. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
