One thing that has been noticeably absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is the appearance of characters from the Netflix original shows. When Marvel’s Daredevil first premiered in 2015, many fans were excited and hopeful that we would eventually see characters like Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand crossover into the larger MCU movies.
With the Netflix shows setting up rich, well-developed storylines and characters, there is a lot of anticipation about how they might tie into the events of the MCU, especially with the growing interconnectedness of the Marvel universe. This absence has raised questions and speculation about the future of these characters within the broader Marvel universe.
At ACE Comic Con in Long Island this past weekend, star of the show Charlie Cox was asked about potential movie characters appearing on Daredevil, and he said:
“I’m afraid I can’t tell you that at all. That is a secret.”
He did say he’d like to see Iron Man on the show, and joked about Robert Downey Jr.’s famously high pay rate:
“I think he’s quite cheap to get as well. I’m sure we can figure that out. His daily rate is like way low.”
We already know none of the street level heroes will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, as Marvel’s Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg stated in a recent interview:
“Our partners are Marvel, and if we’re doing something that’s counter to [their continuity], they would pull us back or orient us on the right path, so clearly we’re [okay]. But we’re very much in our own world.”
While it’s not impossible that it’ll happen in the future, it seems very unlikely at this point. There have been plenty of references to the movies in the shows, but it hasn’t gone the other way around.
Kevin Feige has said it will happen, but he’s not sure when:
“…I don’t really know, but there are a lot of TV shows being made, and hopefully we’ll continue to make a lot of movies. At some point, there’s going to be a crossover. Crossover, repetition, or something.”
Here’s hoping it does – sometime soon.
