James Gunn was recently fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the latest installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, due to offensive tweets of his from years ago that had been unearthed. Although fans and cast stood by the director and petitioned for him to be reinstated on the movie, Disney did not change their mind. It has been unclear up until this point whether or not Disney would still use the script that Gunn had written for the third movie – but now it’s clear.
Sources for The Hollywood Reporter have claimed that Disney are still planning on using James Gunn’s script for the movie. Gunn is currently in the middle of complicated settlement negotiations with the company regarding his exit, which is reportedly being effected by the decision to continue the project with his script.
Experienced talent representatives have estimated that due to the unique nature of the situation, Gunn could be in receipt of $7 million to $10 million.
It doesn’t look like this incident is going to stop the director from getting any work in the future. Many Hollywood studios have expressed desires to get him on board for some big film projects, although he won’t be able to take on any offers until the situation with Disney is completely resolved.
A couple of sources have expressed that there may be a possibility of James Gunn returning in some form, maybe to develop another Marvel movie. “An end-all verdict hasn’t been issued and conversations with Marvel are still ongoing.” So we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for the director, but by the looks of things he won’t be short of work and support.
