The start of 2019 is going to be huge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides possibly the most anticipated film of all time, the still untitled Avengers 4 (although we now know of when the first trailer for said movie will drop), there is also the first female led film in the MCU, Captain Marvel. Set in 1995, the film will be a unique origin story for Marvel’s most powerful hero, before she joins the rest of the Avengers in the Phase 3 Finale two months later. But, while Avengers 4 is shrouded in what is most likely the most secrecy in cinematic history, Marvel Studios aren’t letting much slip on the Captain Marvel front, either. But, thanks to a misstep from a marketing partner, we may now know one of the biggest secrets of the film!
Funko, the incredibly hot collectible company who makes everyone’s favorite cartoony bobble-heads released their Captain Marvel line of Pop! figures. Among the figures was one for Jude Law’s mysterious character, with the name, “Yon-Rogg”. This is a huge spoiler for the film, although after the release of the first trailer, many suspected as much. However, many others assumed that Law was playing Mar-Vell, the warrior who passes the mantle of Captain Marvel to Carol Danvers.
Apparently, Marvel wasn’t happy about this, and Funko has since changed the name to “Star Commander”.
Captain Marvel -Jude laws role is going to be Yon-Rogg not Marvell from r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers
In the comics, Yon-Rogg was the antithesis of Mar-Vell, a military warrior fueled by jealousy and hatred of Vell. With one of the final shots in the trailer for Captain Marvel, we catch a fleeting glimpse at what looks like someone confronting Danvers, wearing an all black version of the Kree Warrior uniform. This led to the speculation that Law would be the actual villain of the film, and not Ben Mendolsohn’s Skrull character. Possibly something like Mordo’s villainous turn in Doctor Strange, but during the film, rather than a post credits scene.
Maybe the upcoming second trailer will shed some more light on this, but whomever Law is actually playing, he will certainly bring a high caliber performance to the film. Look out for him, Brie Larson, and the rest of the cast in Captain Marvel, due out in March of 2019.
