There was a time when Tom Holland was the biggest threat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it came to accidental spoilers. Well, it looks like he may have some stiff competition, as Natalie Portman is unintentionally gunning for the top spot. As Portman prepares to return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, she is set to have a major change to her character and join the ranks of superheroes as The Mighty Thor. As you probably already know, comic book fans know the story attached to the character quite well – and now, it seems that the script will pull quite a bit from that story arc.
Portman made a rather revealing statement, all while trying to avoid spoilers, when talking with Yahoo. She literally stated that she couldn’t reveal anything about the story, but then let the cat out of the bag that the rumors are true: The Mighty Thor story arc of Jane Foster taking up Mjolnir whilst battling cancer is the main inspiration for the film.
“I can’t tell you that much. I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles. If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them they are, the better it is. I’m trying to think – it’s based on the graphic novel of The Mighty Thor. She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side.”
First off, it’s great to hear she’s working on her superhero body, taking the role seriously and ready to grow her character both physically as well as emotionally. But, the biggest reveal here is the cancer angle. It was talked about (but never confirmed) that Foster could be battling cancer in this film. Now, it’s all but confirmed that this film will tackle a very heavy and emotional subject.
It will be interesting to see how Taika Waititi handles it alongside his levity and lightness. As we eluded to above, the director hinted at the possibility of using the cancer storyline back in October, saying:
“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”
Regardless of how he does it, this is a big spoiler of sorts, knowing that Marvel is willing to go this route with their stories and how they handle it will be very interesting to see. One thing is certain; Thor: Love and Thunder is definitely high on everyone’s list of films to see in the MCU!
