UK based writer and comic book fan. Other opinions are available, but they'll almost certainly be wrong.

Whilst I’m sat here typing away, already l can hear the sound of blades being unsheathed from scabbards, as the more excitable members amongst your number prepare to come at me for daring to question the wisdom of Marvel. To those of you, I would plead with you to stay your hand. I’m no click-baiter, or internet troll. I’m not wording this to provoke anger or hate. I’m just a simple writer, who’s voicing his opinion. An opinion which counts for very little. Many other opinions are available. And you most likely will disagree with me, but if on any…

So you think the most exciting thing to hit the internet today is the ‘Justice League’ trailer? Think again. And some set photos taken courtesy of Getty Images have shown film…

Just for the purposes of clarification, we don’t do obituaries for just anybody here at ScreenGeek. The writers record the passing of somebody from the entertainment industry for one of two reasons. In some cases, we get tasked by our Editor because he wants the person’s career to be highlighted to the masses. In others, one of our number feels quite passionately about the sadly departed subject, and takes it upon themselves to mark the event in the most meaningful way they can. So, when I awoke this morning to the news that John Hurt had died at the age…

So, Marvel fans. We’ve finally bid a farewell to 2016. A year that will forever be mired in infamy, largely due to the huge volume of people associated with the Silver Screen that were seemingly cruelly taken away from us. It’s a slightly sinister trend to have developed, but can be explained away by the fact that it’s perfectly natural for the older personalities of the 1940’s and 1950’s (when cinema really started to produce internationally recognized film stars) to be passing away. That, and the fact that the cult of film celebrity is eternally expanding and developing as new…

2007 was a bad year for the ‘Predator’ franchise. With two cult films under it’s belt, the series hadn’t quite received the shot of adrenaline in the arm it had been hoping for from a long awaited big screen face-off with it’s ‘Alien’ cousins, but had nevertheless decided to give the team-up another try with Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. The result was a disaster, a tonally incoherent movie that tried to cherry pick and replicate the highlights of both franchises, whilst adding some truly awful new twists. ‘Requiem’ was both a critical and financial car crash, and marked the lowest…

Whatever your own personal feelings and opinions on this year’s DCEU movie debuts, they’ve did exactly what they set out to do. ‘BvS’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ made a shitload of cash, and they inspired a veritable apocalypse of journalistic and social media debate. Sure, there were glaring mis-steps. And there were also blindingly obvious mistakes. But even the cag-handed editing issues around the two movies pales into insignificance when measured against the long terms plans for this new ‘Extended Universe’. DC and Warner Bros. will learn from their mistakes, and they’ll improve upon them. Arguably, one of the strongest elements…

The internet doesn’t provide much in the way of positives for the modern-day writer. On the whole, it tends to be a somewhat harsh, unrelenting environment, seemingly populated by a persistent hardcore of aggressive fanboys and acid-tongued keyboard warriors. You’ll have undoubtedly experienced the type. Saturating the comments section of any meme they object to, spitting venom and hatred at whoever is responsible for maligning their favorite character. Faced with the inevitably relentless wave of profanity and angry emojis at the hands of this minority of disgruntled critics, it’s a wonder that any scribe chooses to come back to be…

Since it’s official launch back in 2008, the MCU has continued to grow at an almost immeasurable rate. There’s the movies. Then there’s the TV shows. The post-credit scenes. The one-shots. The official accompanying comic-book adaptations. Which all collectively generate a whole host of new supporting characters, references to off-screen and historical events (we’re still waiting for a full explanation of just what went down in Budapest), and continuity holes for fans to thread together. Throw in some dimension-hopping and a bit of time-travel and it’s all getting a bit too much for the rational mind to process. As if…

It’s fair to say that life is pretty sweet for Jon Bernthal right now. By re-inventing the character of Frank Castle for Netflix, he’s won over a legion of adoring comic book, fans, and secured roles in a whole host of blockbusters. He’s also a big fan of Twitter, and caused a bit of a stir last month when he posted several set-photos of himself dressed up in full military assault gear, teasing the fact he had just completing work on a new mystery project. That project, a short film titled ‘The Escape’, has now been released, and it turns…

If you’re a regular frequenter of websites such as the fine one I find myself lucky enough to write for (Remember, spread the word, tell your friends, folks…), you’ll have witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of grief in the online community this week for a chap named Steve Dillon. You may not have known who he was, but if you’re in any significant way a fan of comics, then you’ll have been touched by his work. Steve Dillon was a British comic-book artist, with over 30 years of working in the industry under his belt. He was also the co-creator of…
