Having had an affinity for film from an early age, I've made it my life's mission to watch as many movies as humanly possible. Whether it's watching the classics from the past or the onslaught of comic book properties from the future, I'll be the first in line to offer my own opinion. Read on for the definitive verdict of all things film!

Written and directed by Robert Eggers in his directorial debut, The Witch is already a critical and commercial success. Having won a directing award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Robert Eggers has certainly made an impact with this thought provoking tale of a Puritan family who is torn apart due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite being marketed as a generic horror, The Witch is as arthouse as you can get. No jump scares or cheap gimmicks are to be seen, and instead, we’re given a slow burning, atmospheric story that plays out more like a family drama than a horror.…

Based on the novel of the same name by J.G.Ballard, High-Rise is a movie that will divide audiences in more ways than one. Taking place in an alternate London in 1975, Ben Wheatley has been able to perfectly capture the 70s aesthetic, with murky interior designs and flamboyant duds dominating the mis en scene. However it’s the brutalist brick tower block that really stands out as it protrudes the skyline like a sore thumb of oppression. A formidable sign of the era, there’s a bleak, overhanging sense of dread from the get go as we enter the structure that’ll soon…

British actors have played a big part in Hollywood for a number of years; however, only a select few are household names. With the new generation of British actors dominating the silver screen with Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne, and Tom Hardy to name a few, it’s not surprising to see how the majority come from privileged backgrounds. Does that mean talent only manifests itself in the form of a privileged individual? Of course not. Unfortunately, as with any creative industry, it’s all about who you know. Nepotism runs wild and if you’re new to the game well you…

Judge Dredd is by far one of the most underrated comic book characters out there today. If there’s one thing that we can all agree on, it’s that Judge Dredd is the ultimate badass. With Hollywood going wild on comic book adaptations, many of us had our fingers crossed that Dredd would be not only be a great film but a financial success as well. Whereas Dredd was indeed a critical success, pleasing a legion of fans and casual moviegoers alike, unfortunately it wasn’t a financial one. With a sequel looking unlikely (despite a phenomenal push through the Make A…

After a few minor issues, Ripper has now been released online for all to see. Funded through Indiegogo, this fan-made movie has gathered an experienced cast with Bill Fellows and Bruce Payne lending their talents to the production of this Gotham by Gaslight inspired piece. With a visual style heavily influenced by Italian giallos from the 70s, writer-director James Campbell, is able to provide a unique spin on the Batman mythos.  As a huge fan of both Batman and Giallo cinema, this was the combination that I’ve always dreamed about. The narrative is clear and simple with Chief Inspector Abberline…

Remakes are a huge part of Hollywood and, whether we like it or not, they’ll continue to be for many years to come. There’s nothing worse as a movie lover when you hear that a movie that you love is about to be remade. Movies like Memento, I Saw the Devil, The Craft, Point Break, etc., are all going through the remake treatment and no matter what we do, we’ll have to live on knowing that our beloved has had a makeover. Now it’s understandable for certain movies that didn’t perform well at the time of release to get remade,…

Fans of Michael Dougherty’s previous work (Trick r Treat) have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Krampus hoping to get a modern day festive classic, however it’s with a heavy heart that I’m writing this review to report that we have nothing but a cold turkey on our hands. Krampus is a horror-comedy that is unfortunately neither horrifying or comedic. Although the movie has noble intentions the plot simply isn’t strong enough to sustain its running time and ultimately ends up becoming a chore to watch. One of the main issues with Krampus is the script. It’s tonally lost within…
