Barry Jenkins is one of those directors that know how to shoot a face. That may come off as an odd thing to say, but the man knows how to make his audience look at the actors and actresses head-on in an intimate way that is rarely seen in cinema. Known as a “direct to camera” shot, Jenkins does this in the hopes of bringing the viewer into the film by showing every realistic detail of the characters that will allow a very gut-wrenching and immersive storytelling in the most simplistic way. I bring this technique up because this is…

Creed made me cry. I’m just going to come out the gate and say how much the first one affected me. Originally, I thought the movie wasn’t going to work. The idea of the Balboa legacy being passed onto another generation irked me. I thought Rocky Balboa should’ve been the end of that whole franchise, but I was wrong. I was pumped and ready for Creed 2 which continued to move past the Balboa storyline and further the journeys of Adonis Creed. Unfortunately, I wish they didn’t go for that low hanging Drago fruit but eh, it’s Hollywood. Creed 2…

2018’s LA Comic-Con has passed, and guests were there to celebrate another year with panels featuring folks from some of their fans’ favorite shows, movies, video games, and comics. While attending the convention, Screen Geek had the fortunate act of bumping into masterful cult director Lloyd Kaufman. The head of Troma Entertainment and films like The Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., Tromeo and Juliet—which James Gunn wrote—was there to sign autographs, take photographs, and say whatever he wants to about anything he likes. Do you have any opinions on James Gunn being fired from Marvel for the old tweets he…

I love director Steve McQueen. My first taste of his work came in the form of 2011’s Shame, starring Michael Fassbender as a sexaholic. After that, McQueen blew my cinephile mind away again with the Oscar-winning film 12 Years A Slave. The biopic of Solomon Northup, a free man turned slave, only made me salivate more at McQueen’s keen eye for directing scenes and his ability to pull so much depth from the script and his actors. I honestly couldn’t wait for the director’s next project, Widows. Once I heard that his next film would have a star-studded cast including…

Batman: The Animated Series was a Saturday morning cartoon that garnered a huge fan-base still going strong to this day. The show took a comic book character, his allies, and rogue gallery and turned the show into something relatable and thought-provoking. Warner Bros. has finally answered the call from many fans for a complete Blu-ray deluxe edition of the hit series that some call the best representation of the Dark Knight outside of comics. The cast and crew were at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to discuss  Batman: The Complete Animated Series Deluxe Limited Edition and I was privileged to…

Daredevil has been the go-to show when it comes to Netflix’s Marvel run. Sure, there have been others to follow like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher but none of them have reached the height of stellar episodic storytelling like Daredevil. Audience members were clamoring to see what happened to the man with no fear after the events of Netflix’s The Defenders and who Daredevil’s newest villain would be. With season three right around the corner, they won’t have to wait for long. The latest season just might be the best in the series and it’ll remind…

Remember those articles in scientific journals about people finding a twin buried inside their body? I’m talking about when a someone would find an extra set of teeth or hair near an organ that was mistaken for a tumor, only for that person to find out he or she had absorbed their twin in utero. Jonathan doesn’t use that scientific fact to add that layer of body horror one would expect. What it also lacks is an extra layer of story and plot that would’ve made this sci-fi indie film from first time director Bill Oliver something truly unique. Jonathan…

Nicolas Cage is an actor with an insane amount of range when it comes to his craft. The man has been in every type of genre and sub-genre in cinema—even if he had no place in certain ones. It was only fitting that the Oscar winner (remember, he has one of those) would finally come across director Panos Cosmatos, whose first feature, Beyond the Black Rainbow, was a technicolor orgy fest. Word around the campfire was that Cosmatos’s Mandy is an insane film ripe for midnight screenings and deserving of a cult following. The film is said to be something…

Netflix’s Ozark is back for its second season for all of your Breaking Bad type needs. Season one of the dark-as-fuck drama was a surprise hit, starring Jason Bateman, who’s better known as the voice of reason in the Bluth family on Arrested Development. Sure, the man has been known to flex his dramatic muscle in other shows and movies, but I can’t help but hear Ron Howard narrate Bateman whenever he’s on screen. Producer Mark Williams and writer Bill Dubuque have brought the Byrde family to the edge of danger and back again in the last season and continue…

It’s been one hell of a week for James Bond news and not all of it was good. First the prologue. People were speculating for a while that Daniel Craig might be out as 007 since the tremulous shooting and critical panning of the last Bond film, Spectre. Craig had no problem hiding his lack of interest in returning to the role and news of his replacement had ramped up. Actors like Tom Hardy, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, and classic fan-favorite Idris Elba were rumored to be up for the role. Craig decided to come back—probably after Paramount drove a…
