The Conjuring Universe has spawned several successful horror entries that have connected with both critics and audiences alike, leaving many optimistic for their latest spinoff The Curse of La Llorona. Despite boasting an intriguing premise, the film sadly represents a new low for the Conjuring brand, failing to provide substance or scares to the proceedings. The Curse of La Llorona is based on a Mexican folktale, with the film adaptation following a social worker and single mother Anna (Linda Cardellini), who stumbles upon two tied up children. When she sets them free, she triggers a supernatural force that begins to follow her family. Off the…

Making a noteworthy impression with 2015’s atmosphere-driven and creepy It Follows, director David Robert Mitchell proved he has the makings of one of the next great directors. Thanks to several delays and an unceremonious release, Mitchell’s follow-up Under the Silver Lake has mostly gone under the radar, but it deserves a spotlight for its wildly ambitious home run swings. Under the Silver Lake follows Sam (Andrew Garfield), a slacker who wanders through his days looking for some sort of purpose. He suddenly stumbles upon one when a recently befriended neighbor Sam (Riley Keough) goes missing, leaving him on a chase to find the truth.…
One of the MCU’s unsung heroes is Scarlett Johansson, who has done a fairly good job humanizing Black Widow despite the character never being the star of her own film. While that long-awaited Black Widow film is finally in development, it’s coming over a decade after Johansson first appeared in the MCU in Iron Man 2. That’s kind of ridiculous, but Marvel has begun to turn a new leaf with more female-centered films like Captain Marvel the upcoming The Eternals. In an interview with Digital Spy, Johansson commented on the changes from the MCU’s origin. “Oh yeah, it’s a huge relief for me because, you…
Netflix’s streaming library only continues to grow, with one of their most anticipated upcoming projects being The Witcher, with Superman star Henry Cavill. Based on the novel and video game series, The Witcher has been one of the most acclaimed fantasy projects, giving it the potential to be the next Game of Thrones. While there have been steady developments about the series, Deadline has revealed that Netflix will release the fantasy series “in the last three months of the year,”, as well as other key releases like The Crown. The series is currently being filmed in Hungary. Check out a plot synopsis of…
Before Fortnite took the adolescent gaming scene by storm, there was Minecraft, a charmingly simplistic game that gives its players free rein to create and explore their own worlds. With the game reaching massive heights, Warner Brothers have been trying to get a film adaptation going since 2014, with multiple directors coming and going ever since. Finally, it appears that the Minecraft film is being resurrected from the dead. According to the game’s developers Mojang, Minecraft will officially hit theaters in spring 2022. Check out their official announcement: “Normally, when we’re talking about blockbusters on Minecraft.net, we’re being clever (or so we like to think!) about pickaxes.…
It’s been nearly 3 years since The Conjuring 2 debuted, but the Conjuring brand has only grown since its debut. The massive success of Annabelle: Creation and The Nun have established the series into a cinematic universe, with Warner Brothers greenlighting several spinoffs. After that lengthy wait, Warner Brothers has begun finally working on the long-awaited The Conjuring 3. While fans still have to wait till 2020 to see what is in store, star Vera Farmiga is already hyping up its release. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Farmiga discussed her excitement for the upcoming film: “Conjuring 3 is coming, and it will be a doozy. It will…
The Conjuring Universe has done the improbable of establishing a horror cinematic universe on the big screen. That being said, the series recent entries have hit a snag when it comes to the critics. Last year’s The Nun was unanimously panned (26% on Rotten Tomatoes), with their upcoming film The Curse of La Lorna not faring much better so far (38% on Rotten Tomatoes). That being said, I enjoyed The Nun quite a bit, and audiences seemed to as well considering the film’s successful box office run (365 million worldwide). With that success, Warner Brothers have already greenlit a The Nun 2. According to Deadline…
Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro shocked audiences with Hellboy and its respective sequel The Golden Army, two films that turned Mike Mignola’s overlooked comic series into great superhero films. With a decade passing, Hellboy is now being rebooted on the big screen, this time from genre director Neil Marshall (The Descent). The 2019 Hellboy is a night and day difference from its predecessor, with its shameless and disjointed execution standing out at every corner. Hellboy finds its titular hero (Stranger Things’ David Harbour) tasked to stop the end of the world when Nimue the Blood Queen (Mila Jovovich) arises from the dead to unleash monsters…
The Star Wars brand has remained central in popular cultural zeitgeist since its origin, yet its films have experienced several post-release changes. Much of that is thanks to the creator and former owner of the property George Lucas, whose various special editions added only annoying tweaks to the already great films. Moments like Darth Vader now screaming “No” in Return of the Jedi are both needless and lack an understanding of what made the originals work. With the Star Wars universe now in Disney’s control, the studio is continuing to assert their control over the popular brand. Their latest move is announcing a change in title…
Netflix has had several noteworthy films since dipping their toes in original content, but none of have quiet captured mainstream attention like Bird Box. Even though the film scored modest reviews from critics, it became somewhat of an internet sensation with audiences, even inspiring its own meme entitled “The Bird Box Challenge”. Netflix latest horror film The Silence looks to take that concept, which was also popularised by A Quiet Place, in a different direction. The result is a cheaply made Sci-fy channel film that holds some shameless entertainment value. The Silence follows Ally (Kieran Shipka), a teenager who is lost for hearing but…
